Connecting Community, Arts & Culture Uptown!
NORTHERN MANHATTAN ARTS AND CULTURE (NMAC) is a coalition of organizations and individuals committed to sustaining and promoting the cultural ecosystem of Washington Heights and Inwood.
NMAC is doing a terrific job at shining light at the inspiring and rich arts and culture taking place in Washington Heights and Inwood. I am proud of the work that the artist community has boldly undertaken to connect our diverse community through arts, culture and folklore!
Our community is so diverse and enriching that it can be difficult to keep your finger on the pulse of everything that’s going on in our vibrant neighborhoods. NMAC is filling that niche by effectively reminding us- and others- of our homegrown talents, while also creating a space where our different cultures and arts are both celebrated and nurtured. I’m thankful the organization has articulated a creative and viable solution to an essential community need.
The arts are the heart and soul of Northern Manhattan. Our music, theater, film, dance, visual arts and more–they express our fabulous diversity and draw us together at the same time. I am thrilled that NMAC will give a unified voice to the many wonderful organizations which are bringing the arts to life here uptown.
NMAC is the “go-to” resource for what is happening creatively in Northern Manhattan. By providing artists and cultural organizations with all kinds of access, resources and sense of community, NMAC helps our creative community thrive!
I donated to NMAC understanding the need, especially today, to support the arts. Starting my Broadway career while living in Washington Heights, I realized the importance of Uptown Arts and Culture.
Through our website and programming, NMAC connects those creating and consuming art in Northern Manhattan. With NMAC’s searchable on-line artists, space, and institutional databases, art-makers and art-lovers are able to find and support one another throughout Washington Heights and Inwood. Additionally, we seek to identify different types of venues for art-making; and to strengthen the development and funding capacities of NMAC in order to continue to promote programming that highlights Uptown culture.

The organizations comprising NMAC’s steering committee initially united under the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs’ Building Community Capacity initiative, a grant-funded program designed to collaboratively advance the artistic culture of four low-income neighborhoods. The program brings together local arts stakeholders for intensive training sessions, workshops, and public activities designed to highlight the importance of the arts to a thriving community. Washington Heights and Inwood entered DCLA’s BCC program in April 2016. The program lasts through December 2017.
