  • UP Theater Company offers fully produced professional theater to its community in Northern Manhattan, and develops new plays – employing many theater artists who live here. We eschew crowd-pleasing chestnuts in favor of daring new work that challenges its audience’s preconceived notions about what they think they think. Now in its 8th year, UP has fully produced 10 world premieres and has demanded attention with its diverse theatrical endeavors – from cunning adaptations of The Canterbury Tales and its Summer Heat readings, to its Showing UP opportunities where artists share their works in progress, to our Dead of Winter Reading Series, our audacious “Subway Wedding”, and the annual, ecstatic Onward & UPward gala benefits. The company’s first full production in May 2011 was the provocative “dramatic terrorist prison comedy,” All The Best Ingredients, by Artistic Director James Bosley. Then came The Chalkboard Trilogy by Nancy Nevárez (November 2011); K Comma Joseph by Kirby Fields (November 2012); “4″,a quartet of new one act plays by uptown writers (June 2013); Ashé by Ricardo Pérez-González (November 2013); James Bosley’s Broad Channel(April 2014); Epic Poetry (May 2015); An American Drum Circle by Vanessa Shealy (May 2016); Merciful Father by Atar Hadari (November 2016); and Lost/Not Found by Kirby Fields (May 2017).

UP has received support from The Lower Manhattan Cultural Foundation, The Puffin Foundation, The Neighborhood Fund of Columbia University Medical Center, and Project Resources Group.
